Biography
Robert Wickens has targeted the GP3 Series championship title as the next stepping stone in his quest to become the first Canadian Formula 1 driver since former world champion Jacques Villeneuve.
The 21-year-old from Ontario arrives in GP3 off the back of claiming the runner-up position in last year's FIA Formula 2 Championship, in which he took five poles and three fastest laps, as well as two race victories.
A race winner in every formula in which he has competed, his first season in Europe in 2008 saw Wickens compete in the Euro Series Formula 3 and World Series by Renault categories as part of the Red Bull junior programme. He first drove with Red Bull North America in 2006, when he won the Formula BMW USA championship, before going on to finish third overall in the 2007 Formula Atlantic series with the famed Forsythe Championship Racing team.
This year's GP3 campaign sees Wickens re-united with Status Grand Prix, having first raced with the team aboard its A1 Team Canada entry in the 2007-08 A1GP World Cup of Motorsport. That season Wickens became A1GP's youngest-ever pole winner, and scored a famous victory on the streets of Durban, South Africa, that marked him out as one of hottest properties on the motorsport ladder.
